Why do you need Business Advice?
Running a business can be a complicated and highly involved endeavour, especially for sole traders and small partnerships where business owners are required to wear many hats.
In any setting, no one person can be expected to be an expert on every topic, that’s why finding reliable advisors and experts is so important. Even in healthcare, a family doctor will routinely consult with, and refer to, specialist physicians. The business world is no different, and many business owners, leaders and executives choose to seek advice from experienced and qualified business advisors and consultants.
The best way to explain this, is to give a simple example. Let’s say you are a qualified electrician, and have worked for a large electrical company for 20 years before deciding to start your own business so you have increased flexibility and higher earning potential. Throughout your career, you likely have gained immense experience in many areas of running an electrical business, including compliance and regulations, customer service, etc. While that’s great to have, you might not have much experience with managing finances, understanding your GST obligations, writing a business or marketing plan, or even interpreting financial reports like a profit and loss statement. That’s where a business advisor can help, by increasing your understanding, answering questions and helping to identify strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for growth or development. They might not be able to rewire a home, but they can help to strengthen and improve your business.
What to expect in your first session
Like going to a doctor, a good business advisor won’t offer advice without first understanding your situation, so we first spend time getting to know you and your business, and the specific problems or challenges you’re facing – as well as providing you the opportunity to get to know us.
After that, we discuss some general strategies and possible solutions, and share our knowledge and experience. Sometimes, we need to go away and do some research first so we’re certain that we’re giving you good advice!
We often also provide clients with resources for learning, and templates you can use to help grow your business, and overcome the challenges you face.
Limitations of Business Advice
You wouldn’t take medical advice from a mechanic (we hope!) and you wouldn’t take mechanical advice from a neurosurgeon.
We each have strengths and weaknesses, and our strength is in business strategy and bridging the gap between business theories and the real world of entrepreneurship. While we have qualifications and experience in business & management, we are not lawyers or chartered accountants – so we can’t give legal or financial investment/personal income taxation advice. (We can’t help fix your car either – sorry!)
